The annual school budget vote and Board of Education election will coincide with the final day of Shavuot this year – Tuesday, May 18 – for most school districts in New York.

The City School District of Albany will offer in-person and absentee voting options. This year’s absentee options will include an option for those concerned about potential exposure to COVID-19. The state is allowing this consideration due to the continued health and safety concerns surrounding the pandemic.

Voters interested in casting an absentee ballot who do not meet the state’s other absentee criteria can select the COVID-19 option by checking “temporary illness or physical disability” on the absentee ballot application. Please note that the state does not provide an option for absentee voting due to religious observances.

If you have questions about this year’s budget and board vote in Albany, or if you would like to request an absentee ballot application, please contact Board Clerk Tanya Bowie at tbowie@albany.k12.ny.us or (518) 475-6015.

If you request an absentee ballot be sent to you by mail, a completed absentee application must be received by the district clerk at least seven days before the vote – by Tuesday, May 11 at 4 p.m. If you plan to pick up the absentee ballot in-person at Academy Park, you have until the day before the vote to submit an absentee application – Monday, May 17 by 4 p.m.

If you live in a school district outside of Albany, we encourage you to contact your school district’s main offices for more information about the May 18 vote.

Along with the absentee options, Albany will conduct voting in-person May 18 at 15 locations throughout the city. Polls in Albany will be open from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m.

The Albany school board and district are currently in the process of developing a budget proposal for the 2021-22 school year. The board has two meetings scheduled during the week of March 29 – Monday, March 29 and Thursday, April 1. Both meetings will include budget discussions.

The meetings will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Albany School of Humanities, 108 Whitehall Road. You also can watch the meetings virtually.

The Albany school board anticipates adopting a 2021-22 budget proposal by mid-April.

You can visit Albany’s Budget section for more information, and updates as the process moves forward.

Two seats on the Albany school board also will be up for election May 18. The terms of Vice President Vickie Smith and board member Sridar Chittur, Ph.D., expire June 30; both plan to seek re-election. You can visit the district’s Board section for more information about running for the board.
